Laser Hole Drilling
An aspect of the current NALI program focus is on laser drilling of turbine-engine components, with typical features of interest being shaped cooling holes for turbine airfoils. Other areas of investigation include cooling holes in combustor, augmenter and nozzle applications in metals and non-metals. Extension of initial studies to precision cutting and welding of components such as combustors and mixers will occur in the future.
The NALI Laser Applications Laboratory is located at CCAT's Innovation Center in East Hartford, CT. It contains a wide variety of laser systems and support equipment including:
- Prima Convergent P50 Nd: YAG Laser with Q-Switch coupled to 7 axis Work Cell
- DMG Lasertec 80 Powerdrill Shape Workstation
- IPG Photonics YLP-1/100/20 Yb: Glass Fiber Laser coupled to a Dual Laser Marking Cell
- Nutfield Cipher V10 Sealed CO2 Pulsed Laser coupled to a Duel Laser Marking Cell
